Tamme Dijkstra and Geertje van Dompselaar

        Albertus Dijkstra was the second born son of Tamme and Geertje Dijkstra, born the 28th of March in 1901. Tamme was a farm labourer and his father Rinse was a boatman and carried potatoes, probably along the canals. Geertje's father, Albertus van Dompselaar (boss of the mounts is the meaning of the surname) built homes on mounts and later bought the mounts and carried the sand to raise the homes above sea level. This could explain why the van Dompselaar branch of the family seemed to be more well off than the average person of the day. Rinse's father (my great great great grandfather) was Gerlof Rinse Dijkstra born Sept 17 1806 and died at age 48. We think we have a photo of him because it is sepia toned and those preceded black and whites (also Uncle Aga identified it has his great grandfather). It is either of him or Alberts brother, Gerlof. If anyone knows please let us know. As was common in that era, at about age 12, the children were often sent off to work. Willem and Gerlof, it is thought, worked at dairy's in California and made good money, returning to Holland to build a dairy. Willem later immigrated to Canada. Klaas Dijkstra's son, Tjalling Dijkstra still lives in Hitsum and is modernizing an old family home so that he and his wife can raise sheep back in the old dairy. Our next goal is to find our cousins in Holland and Canada.
